FAQ's
What is the meaning of your company name, Suluk 46?
When I was looking at creating a name for the company, I wanted to incorporate a term that implied light weight, but I also wanted to include a personal meaning in it. The word Suluk is a term used in the Inuktitut language. The language is spoken by the Inuit who inhabit the Canadian Arctic and Sub Arctic Regions. Suluk can be translated into "Feather“. The ’46′ at the end of the company name corresponds to the line of Latitude that crosses a small mountain located in Killarney Provincial Park known as Silver Peak. It was in this park where I was introduced to camping. My father used to take me as a child and while I did not get the chance to climb this small hill while he was around, it was a mutual goal for us. I visit this area at least a few times each year. Put these two together and Suluk 46 is created.
I think you need to update the look of your website. Why does it look like an amateur built it?
Thank you for the compliment :) Believe it or not, I openly acknowledge the dated feel of the website and am embarrassed (not really). However, I spend my free time building and developing gear, as well as using it in the field. I have chosen this path over learning the intricate art of website design. If and when I come to a point where I feel the need to teach myself some new skills, I will. Until then, I urge you to enjoy the information contained on the website and mentally block out the visual aspect of it.
Is your gear suitable for the average backpacker? How durable is it?
Very good question, and I have to be honest, probably not. The gear that is found on the Suluk 46 website is considered specialized products designed specifically for UL backpackers who are well experienced and familiar with this type of gear. If you are curious about the durability of a certain product or are on the fence as to whether or not it will work for you, the product may not be suitable for you. When you are ready for Suluk 46 products, you will know it.
Can you recommend some gear for someone who is looking to enter into the sport of backpacking?
I enjoy helping people as much as I can and I will always try to be as helpful as possible to all inquiries regarding gear. However, it is important to realize that I do not use very many products that one typically finds in some of the more popular and common outfitters (MEC, REI, etc.). Therefore, I am usually of very little help when it comes to products found there. For the last several years I have used only the lightest gear available on the market and will continue to do so. It is this line of products that I am intimately familiar with and the most knowledgeable about.
I saw under "adventures" that you have completed a hike that I would also like to do, can you help me plan it?
Yes, of course, that's why I post them here on the website. If you want any advice or help planning your next trip, just send me an e-mail with your questions and I would be happy to help as much as I can.
Where do you purchase your cuben fiber from?
I purchase all my cuben fiber direct from the manufacturer, Cubic Tech. They have a 9 meter minimum. I believe it is also available from a number of other distributors in smaller quantities, but do not know of them. Do a search online and you should be able to find some.
I am having trouble purchasing cuben fiber. Can I buy some from you?
Yes, you can. I will gladly purchase the 9 meter minimum for you from the manufacturer and then re-ship it to you. Please understand that I pay a very high shipping cost to have it shipped to me. You will be responsible for the shipping cost for the fabric to get to me and then also for the cost of shipping to get the fabric to you. The end price will be very high.
I submitted an order to purchase some products but have not received an invoice back from you?
There are 2 reasons for this:
1) If it has only been a day or it is the weekend, do not worry. I am most likely away from the computer and will reply to you as soon as I get home.
2) If it has been many days, make sure you typed your e-mail address correctly on the form. Many times this information is typed incorrectly and there is no way for me to get in touch with you. If time continues to pass, simply send me an e-mail using info@suluk46.com and we will work it out.
I have not received my package yet, where is it?
I know how it is, waiting by the door for new gear to arrive! I ship everything insured with a tracking number so there is never a serious concern. Shipments within North America are typically in the 10-15 business day window. However, sometimes it takes much longer than this. Send me an e-mail to let me know you have not received it so I can keep my eye on it, I will help as much as I can. I ask only that you are patient as it is completely out of my hands. When and if it does go missing, I will promptly refund your money or send another package - it's up to you. My experience has been that even when the post office deems it lost and refunds the money, the package will eventually show up at either my place or yours. Suluk 46 has NEVER officially lost a package - it ALWAYS ends up somewhere.
What type of warranty do you offer on your products?
OK, just like everyone else, I offer a warranty of 1 year against material and manufacturing defects. But additionally, I offer what is called the "Good Guy Warranty" on all my products. I am just a guy making and selling gear and I want you to be happy. This is a small business where I build, pack, and ship all the products. In this small industry, customer satisfaction is of utmost importance. Therefore, I want to ensure that what I am providing is at or above your expectations. If you are not happy with the product, if is not working as intended, or if you are not a satisfied customer, please contact me immediately so I can turn you into a satisfied customer! News travels fast these days, and with no real advertising or marketing in place for Suluk 46, I rely on you....the happy customer!
