PATAGONIA, TORRES DEL PAINE
191 KM BY FOOT AND PACKRAFT, O'CIRCUIT AND RIO PAINE, NOV 2016

I took the classic and popular O'circuit route in Torres Del Paine and added a few days to the end of the itinerary to packraft the Rio Paine. The frontside of this loop is well equiped with food and shelter while the backside is slightly more remote. Both sides are worthy of a visit and can be done by anyone is decent shape. If you are fortunate enough to have a packraft, hike up to the mouth of Lago Paine after you finish the loop and put in at the Rio Paine, then ride the river all the way to the park entrance - be prepared to portage some serious rapids, the waterfalls and drops will literally kill you and the river moves fast! You have been warned....

SOUTH-WEST ICELAND
THE LAUGAVEGUR TRAIL, JUN 2016

The Laugavegur Trail is a famous trek in Southwest iceland that runs from Landmannalauger to Thorsmork and then up and over the high pass to Skogafoss. This 77km route is often partially completed when trekkers stop in Thorsmork, covering only 55km...don't be that person ;) The final push from Thorsmork to Skogafoss is incredible and shouldn't be missed. I did the full trail in 3 days, before the road to Landmannalauger even opened. It was unbelievable!

Mount Hua, or Hua Shan, is a mountain located close to the city of Huayin in the Shaanxi province of China. To reach the base, one must travel over 1000 km south west of Beijing, China. Once there, you are rewarded with exceptional views and landscapes, as well as the Huashan Plank Walk, which is often called the deadliest hike in the world. Check out my video to see what it is all about!

GEORGIAN BAY ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK
CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF BEAUSOLEIL ISLAND , OCT 2015

Roughly 2 hours north of Toronto, this National Park filled with Islands is a popular summer destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. I waited until late in the year to hike the perimeter of Beausoleil Island, not only to avoid the crowds, but to test out some shoulder season gear. I ended up lucking out and had the whole island to myself!

PACIFIC RIM NATIONAL PARK
WEST COAST TRAIL , MAY 2015

One of the most famous trails in Canada is the West Coast Trail that leads a hiker 75 kilometers along the west coast of Vancouver Island. It was on my bucket list for years, and I finally found the time to sneak away and check this one off the list. I was seriously lucky to encounter nearly zero precipitation over my 4 day trip!

WITHLACOOCHEE STATE FOREST
CITRUS HIKING TRAIL , MAR 2015

I was lucky enough to have a business trip down to Orlando and took the opportunity to spend the weekend to hike the Citrus Hiking Trail in Withlacoochee State Forest. 2 days later and 49 km later, I was back at my car heading to the airport for my flight home. This easy hiking trail would be perfect for first time hikers and short overnighters. It's a dry trail, so keep that in mind when planning your hike.

PUKASKWA NATIONAL PARK
THE COASTAL HIKING TRAIL, JULY 2014

This is a great trail that was much busier than I had expected given that it took me 14 hours to drive there from Toronto and the high expense of using the water taxi to shuttle me to the beginning of the trail. I planned to take four days to complete the hike, based on the feedback from the park office, but ended up knocking it off in three. It was a bit rainy and a bit cold, but its a beautiful rugged trail, and a must for the hiking list!

ALGONQUIN PROVINCIAL PARK
WESTERN UPLANDS TRAIL (THIRD LOOP), JUNE 2014

Although this trail is within a few hours drive from my house, I never took the time to hike the entire circuit. Well, the time came, the weather was great, and I headed into the interior of Algonquin Provincial Park to hike the entire outside loop of the Western Uplands Trail; covering roughly 73 kilometers in 4 days.

FORT LA CLOCHE PROVINCIAL PARK AND SURROUNDING AREA
HEAVEN'S GATE TRAIL, MAY 2011

I didn't even know about this trail until last year. After being told about it, I searched the internet but found no information and only a couple of references. I immediately started looking into hiking this trail and what it would involve. With no plans for the long weekend, I packed up my gear and headed north with my friend Jay to check this one off the list.

KILLARNEY PROVINCIAL PARK
WINTER TRIP TO SILVER PEAK, FEB 2010

We were finally getting some real winter weather and decided to make the best of it by hiking across the frozen lakes of Killarney Provincial Park and up to the top of Silver Peak. I was joined, once again, by my good friend Jason for a nice overnighter that took us to the top of the 3rd highest point in Ontario, Silver Peak.

WAKAMI LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK
HEIGHT OF LAND TRAIL, AUG 2009

My good friend Jason and I spent 5 days and 75 km hiking around Wakami Lake on the Height Of Land Trail. This loop crests the height of land which splits the Arctic and Atlantic watersheds. Great weather the whole time, but major bushwhacking, chased and stung by bees, charged by a jack rabbit, and battling condensation left us a bit tired on the last day. Would we do it again? Of course!!!

LAKE SUPERIOR PROVINCIAL PARK
COASTAL TRAIL, APRIL 2009

I took about 8 lbs of gear on this 5 day trip along the Coastal Trail in Lake Superior Provincial Park. I had to deal with temperatures ranging from 28*C to -3*C and from sun to snow. This trail has some challenging terrain and a lightweight pack makes it much more fun!

FRONTENAC PROVINCIAL PARK
AROUND THE PARK IN 2 DAYS, APRIL 2009

I took this trip to test my Sub 4 lb gear list in the spring. Temps dipped a bit lower then I would have liked but I survived. I ended up hiking a giant loop around most of the park. The terrain is relatively flat in this park but I always end up seeing lots of wildlife in the park. A nice trade off in scenery.

BRUCE PENINSULA NATIONAL PARK
BRUCE TRAIL SECTION HIKE, APRIL 2009

I had some last minute time off so I decided to spend a couple of days hiking with my Sub 5 lb gear list along a section of the Bruce Trail. This section is only about 2.5 hours from my house and I had never been here before. I couldn't believe how beautiful the terrain was. I was lucky and had nice and warm temps the whole time. A little wind to deal with but other then that it was quite pleasant.

NEPAL
EVEREST AND GOKYO REGION, MAY 2007

Traveling through Costa Rica, I had met a guy who was a guide on Everest. We ended up becoming friends and he recommended I travel the foothills of Everest for a few weeks. I flew from Toronto to Chicage to India and finally to Nepal where I spent 27 days...16 of which were spent on a solo trip through the foothills of the Everest and Gokyo Region. This is a trip I will never forget.
